Leadership is an art of enabling group of people working together
for the development and achievement of certain goals. It is a
complex process of making an individual competent enough so that his
followers go after his directions. For this purpose a leader should
possesses definite attributes of maturity, wisdom, character
building, loyalty and overall a broad vision. Emphasis on the
significance of leadership can’t be neglected. There present an
evolving series on the literature of leadership. These theories
focused on the characteristic and behavior of dominant leaders. They
also demonstrate the roles of the followers for making the movement
successful.

Great man theory is the most popular one. It assumes that great
leaders are not made, instead they are born. It says that they are
inherited with the heroic and mythic qualities. Using the word man
in the model shows primary relation of male quality in leadership
particularly in military control.
Another well known theory regarding leadership is Trait theory. It
describes particular personality characteristics for leaders to
hold. It depicts about behavioral and functional temperament needed
for the ruler. The theory illustrates that positive ambitious nature
is required to head structural framework of the people. In contrast
to Great man model, Behavioral theory declares that great rulers
aren’t born but are made. As its name suggests, the idea beliefs
that real leaders are not made by just mental and internal
attributes but solid actions, positive behavior and optimistic steps
are needed as well. It has also provided a suggestion that one may
hold leadership qualities through teaching and close observation.
A different approach that came into practice is Situational Theory.
In this model ways to deal with specific situations are noted. It
facilitates leaders to select best course of action relying on the
situation. It improves decisions making capability of supervisors.
It also offers that same organization may practices different
management styles. Contingency theory is a refinement of situational
perspective. It focuses on precise variables associated with the
circumstances. It suggests that not a particular mode of guidance is
best in all situations; instead leaders need to identify the
situation and observe the behavior of his followers. Then predict
the most suitable approach for effective management.
Management or transactional theory recommends that leadership should
be assigned as a reward or punishment. The superior role is assigned
on their performance and progress. These managerial philosophies are
frequently used in business. More competent employees are bestowed
with bonus on the other hand penalty is charged on poor schedules.
Finally, transformational or relationship theory covers the
relationship between leaders and followers. It covers the role of
leaders in motivating and inspiring the people by giving importance
to their good work. It develops high moral and ethical standards in
leaders enabling them to unleash the hidden potential of the
workers.
All these models contribute in providing an effective organization
and enabling the leaders to fill the gap between them and their
followers.
