The speech by Sam Brownback is
very impressive and intriguing. It lets us summarize and realize
as to where we are letting our culture to accede. The true
reality of the current pop rock culture is exposed. Mr. Sam
starts with why he has chosen this platform to deliver the
speech about the current pop culture. Then he explains what is
wrong with the pop culture. But first he makes it clear that
there is quite a clear difference between freedom of speech and
respect of dignity and honor and restrictive censorship
policies. He says that he is in no way opponent of
libertarianism, but there must be some boundaries.
The description of the augmenting situation of crime especially
towards women has a lot been owed by the heinous sort of music,
which portrays violence and vulgarity not only by the torturous
and defamatory music but also by the loudness. The example of
Plato’s thought of what music is about is a good contribution in
a way it made the audience realize the difference between good
and bad music. Music is the nourishment of soul. True, as
suggested by Sam. And violent music creates violence in the
society, is also a very proven fact shown by the increased
number of rape and murder victims. The reference of the survey
in which kids spent four hours a day listening music is also a
very good point to illustrate the opinion. This shows that
children and teenagers are greatly influenced by this violent
music.

The prestige of women mentioned as regard to these condemnation
of violent music is in fact very relevant as to the current
situation when the crimes against women has sworn. The equality
of women and their respect are under question.
I think Sam is a very liberal politician and a very clever
propagandist. On one had he is utilizing the opportunity to
condemn the true violence music and on the other he is making
the audience feel that women projections in these music are
nonetheless derogatory and that women demand greater respect
from society that mere abusive and cruel words. Also the mention
of music as an export is related to make American music
competitive in the market. And as US norms are not always
applied outside America and that the culture outside does not
support violence against women to such an excessive nature. This
would ultimately jeopardize the image of Americans over the
globe. The image which US has built after such a long struggle
and hardship.
The stake of society and culture
is also mentioned. The long-term effects on society are
envisaged. I think these stirs emotions in the audience and also
shivers them if once for a while they see what violence it would
compel if not discouraged. The appeal to the masses to recognize
as to what is right and what is wrong is a good tactic of making
one’s opinion accepted and respected. In this way freedom of
thought and speech validates and people out to appreciate and
think.
The denouncement of rock bands
promoting violent music culture may be good in some people’s
minds, but to others, it might not. As human being are animals
by nature, and the popularity of such bands predict that animal
instincts are intimate to the so-called civilized society. So,
this must not have been done so prominently as to mention names.
However, it does ham their repute. But civilization demands
courtesy and respect and honor, which is what the speaker
demands of. After all Sam is not against restriction and
censorship, and is staunch proponent of liberty of rights. This
is what he says. He suggests that people must themselves decide
what is wrong and what is right for them and for their up coming
generations.
