There are many misconceptions regarding color blindness. The
conception that color blindness is total blindness is hype. In this
term paper on color blindness, I want to reveal the truth behind all
such misconceptions. Actually color blindness is imprecise
perceptual feeling to some specific colors. It is also observed that
people with color blindness see everything in one color. Most often
people with color blindness just see misrepresented colors. These
people have problem in seeing some colors. Many types of color
blindness exist.

The most common form of color blindness is red- green deficiency.
Color blindness was first discovered by John Dalton. There are many
types of color blindness. The most common type of color blindness is
red green deficiency. The people having this type of eye defect
cannot distinguish between red and green color.
This term paper on color blindness will reveal the real causes of
color blindness. Color blindness exists due to defect in retina. The
human retina converts light energy that is falling on its surface
into electrical energy. These electrical impulses are then sent to
brain. The decoding of electrical impulses into information is done
by photoreceptor cells. Rods and cones are two types of
photoreceptor cells. Cones enable an individual to differentiate
between various different kinds of colors. These cones are of red,
blue and green colors. Cones recognize different colors by detecting
different wavelengths of light. Color blind people have lesser
number of cones due to which they mix up various different colors
and are unable to differentiate them.
Sometimes Color blind people have to face problems due to such
defect. For example they face problems in understanding traffic
signals. It is really difficult for color blind people to operate
machinery having green light as safety and red light as dangerous.
Even children having color blindness face problems at school while
studying and following instructions. Most often such children
couldn’t understand the things written on board with green, red or
any colored chalk. It is necessary for teachers to be aware of
student’s problems and to help them. Teachers in order to help color
blind student should always use white chalk for writing on board.
Measures should be taken to help people having color blindness.
