It should be noted that after the speech, the country witnessed a
pronounced surfacing of what we call modern freedom. The changes
wrought first by the Civil War and then by industrialization,
urbanization and migration had a pronounced effect on the freedom of
the nation. It should be understood that the term freedom has
involved on its connotations and implementation. What meant then as
liberation based on caste and color has today evolved to include
gender, thought and religion. Therefore the importance of this is
that with time the events that have taken place have left an
indelible mark on the history of the country. The importance of this
is that we see that once a thought pattern is set in the country
then the events no matter what their nature, always yield the result
that in some manner helps the country in achieving its determined
goal.

In the case of Lincoln and America, the speech helped define the
concept of freedom, as the ability to reach new avenues and to
explore in the universe, despite of problems, and difficulties. The
speech helped define the fact that such endeavors should in no way
be restricted by the color or social caste of the system. The
concept became so entrenched in the system that the country as a
whole came to be known as the land of dreams, and the concept of the
“American Dream” flourished.
The other concept that is well defined through the speech is that of
an American. This term is gauged by the existence of loyalty to the
land and by the following of principles that are enshrined in the
land. This therefore crosses the traditional barriers of citizenship
by birth, skin color or religion. Therefore the importance of this
speech is that it helped define the mindset of the entire nation,
making it a welcoming country for foreigners. This welcoming nature
helped it prosper and become one of the most powerful nations of the
current time.
The speech has also helped define the importance of social class in
the country. It should be noted that with time the barriers that
once existed in the traditional society of social class have
evaporated and with time it has become increasingly easy to cross
these barriers and move from one class to another. This has
primarily taken place due to the presence of great opportunities
that have been provided to those who aspire and aim high. It should
further be noted that the concept has evolved over a relatively
small period of time. Nations around the world have evolved over a
period opt several centuries and this is apparent in the cultured
and tradition of the people. However, the American nation ahs
evolved only in a couple of centuries and therefore the concept of
time and history is skewed in the nation. The nation therefore is
highly result oriented and is very homogenous and is capable of
absorbing and changing a multitude of nationalities from around the
globe.
